KFSH Demonstrates How Artificial Intelligence Delivers Measurable Value Across Healthcare Systems
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH) has developed an on-site artificial-intelligence system that turns technical radiology reports into patient-friendly explanations in plain Arabic and English. The tool provides a concrete example of KFSH's wider approach: build AI around an existing clinical workflow, test it with patients and clinicians, and keep medical judgement and institutional governance at the center of deployment.
A prospective study of 98 adult outpatients at KFSH Jeddah found that 94.9% preferred the AI-simplified Arabic version of their radiology report, while independent radiologists judged 96.9% of the reports safe for patient release. The authors described the results as promising but requiring further validation before broad clinical deployment. The study, "AI-powered radiology report simplification in Arabic", illustrates how locally developed AI can improve patient understanding while keeping data processing on site.
In clinical settings, AI supports applications across oncology, cardiology, radiology and genomic medicine. It can help specialists interpret complex datasets, identify patterns that may not be immediately visible through conventional analysis and bring relevant information closer to the point of clinical decision-making.
Digital-twin technology also enables surgical teams to simulate and rehearse procedures before entering the operating room. By exploring patient-specific anatomy and different procedural scenarios in advance, teams can strengthen preparation for complex interventions and anticipate potential challenges.
Operationally, KFSH's Capacity Command Center uses real-time data and predictive tools to coordinate patient flow and hospital resources. Since 2021, the center has supported more than 170,000 interventions, contributing to a reduction in inpatient waiting times from 32 hours to six hours and a 14% decrease in emergency-department delays.
KFSH's approach also places governance, workforce readiness and clinical accountability at the center of AI adoption. Training clinicians and developers to understand both the capabilities and limitations of AI helps ensure that systems are implemented responsibly and that medical judgement remains central to care.
The hospital's experience indicates that healthcare AI creates sustainable value when it is embedded within trusted clinical and operational systems rather than deployed as a collection of disconnected pilots.
