Mozambique Records Twelve Fatalities in Cholera

(MENAFN) Mozambique is facing a deadly cholera crisis, with authorities confirming 12 fatalities and 135 fresh infections within a single day, Saturday's official figures reveal.

The Directorate of Public Health reports an alarming escalation across three provinces—Tete, Nampula, and Cabo Delgado—where all dozen deaths were concentrated since the epidemic erupted last September.

Tete Province, located in the Southeast African nation's central belt, has emerged as ground zero for the outbreak. The region witnessed its death count more than double recently, while recording 87 additional patients in just 24 hours.

January 28 alone saw Mozambique register 135 new infections, resulting in 49 hospitalizations.

The year 2025 has already claimed 169 lives to cholera nationwide, pushing the government to implement a strategic framework announced September 16 of the previous year, targeting cholera's elimination as a public health crisis by decade's end.

Cabinet spokesperson Innocencio Impissa recently briefed journalists, stating the "goal is to have Mozambique free of cholera as a public health problem by 2030, where communities will have access to safe water, sanitation, and quality health care achieved through multisectoral actions that are coordinated and informed by scientific evidence."

The outbreak intensifies as Mozambique battles catastrophic flooding that has claimed numerous lives and uprooted millions following relentless weeks of heavy rainfall.
